M/Y Naja (1916) – Classic Swedish elegance

Designed in 1916 by C.G. Pettersson and built in mahogany at Hästholmsvarvet in Nacka, M/Y Naja was commissioned by Clas Gabriel Timm, the last owner of Engelsbergs bruk.

This one-of-a-kind saloon yacht measures 12.3 metres and reflects the craftsmanship of her era.

A yacht with a remarkable history

After Timm sold Engelsbergs bruk to Axel Ax:son Johnson in 1916, part of the proceeds helped fund Naja’s construction. Registered with the Royal Swedish Yacht Club (KSSS) in 1917, she became the Timm family’s saloon yacht on the Strömsholm Canal.

Over the years she has been known as NEA and Tärnan, and has served in several roles:

• Private family yacht on the Strömsholm Canal

• Executive boat in Gothenburg

• Shuttle boat at Läckö Castle in the 1970s

• Excursion boat at Schenströmska Manor in Ramnäs

• Preserved in a boathouse for 16 years

Her current Stockholm owner acquired Naja in 2023 in largely original but worn condition. A careful restoration is under way.

Original character and maritime heritage

Built in mahogany with classic proportions (12.3 by 2.3 metres), Naja has been powered by a 125 hp Ford diesel engine since the 1950s. In 2025, the Swedish Ship Preservation Association recognised her cultural heritage value.

Living history

M/Y Naja recalls a time when boats were drawn by hand and built by skilled craftspeople. Today, this piece of Swedish maritime history is returning to Stockholm’s waters.
